Abstract/Additional Information
Abstract Only - A major liquefaction slide occurred in the upstream slope and crest of the Lower San Fernando Dam in Southern California immediately following the February 9, 1991 earthquake. The liquefaction slide almost resulted in a breach of the earth embankment and an uncontrolled release of the reservoir.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Waterways Experiment Station (WES) in 1985 funded a re-evaluation of the Lower San Fernando Dam liquefaction slide to test the validity of using steady-state concepts to analyze the slide. The re-evaluation was a cooperative effort of the WES, the University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and GEI Consultants, Inc. CONT.
